Van Meter Reception

3/23/2013

When  Robert  Van Meter died unexpectedly in early December, the gallery decided it  was  imperative that a show be mounted to honor him and his work.  Not only were Van Meter’s turned pieces of the highest quality, the range was enormous   including everything from stunning turned “art” bowls to practical nut crackers and rolling pins to “just-for-fun” pieces, such as a “mosquito house,” reflecting Van Meter’s droll sense of humor. Taken as a  whole, the work demonstrates a quality found in all truly great artists: a need  to keep trying new things.
As his son  Barry put it, “Once he mastered something, it was time to move on.”  More than a  dozen objects will be on display during the show’s two week run, on loan  from  the family and members of the Apple Valley Wood-Turners, which Van Meter helped  launch. One of the members, Mark Zimmerman, who shows and sells his work through  the Fire House Gallery, will curate the show.  Attend the  opening Friday, March 22nd from 6:00 to 8:00 pm and you’ll not only see this wood-turner’s  amazing work, you’ll also meet another  well-known and much loved member of our  community, Val Van Meter, Winchester Star reporter and the late artist’s  wife. (taken from the Fire House Gallery and Shop's website!)

Here are some photos of this lovely event:

Andrea, thank you SO much for taking time to shoot these photos while attending the Van Meter opening at the Fire House gallery on Friday, March 22nd. They capture better than words every could the size of the gathering -- at 60 people the largest in gallery's young history -- and the enjoyment people were taking viewing Van Meter's amazing work and sharing comments about it with each other. The event ran well past its official 8pm closing time. And the bidding on the five remaining pieces of his work that we're offering thru a silent auction has been vigorous indeed.
Most important, we hope others will view the show, which closes April 6 to gain a greater appreciation for Van Meter, the artist AND the man.

Let me add how thrilled the Fire House Gallery is to have YOU as its newest artist. Your delightful, warm-hearted watercolors are both accomplished and distinctive and we look forward to introducing you to collectors in Shenandoah Valley and beyond.
